Haiti Earthquake

Sam Boydstun

Two weeks ago a 7.0 earthquake hit the small Caribbean island of Haiti. Haiti which is a developing world country that is still mostly in poverty. Much of the island is devastated and even the U.N. headquarters is destroyed. Tens of thousands have been killed or trapped, and the whole island is in complete destruction.

Its not even imaginable how horrible the situation is. Since the country is still in development, relief supplies are almost non existent. Basically a 7.0 would still be devastating in the U.S. and Haiti is left with no way to supply around 100,000 people with basic medical supplies and human necessities. Junior Iris Dudek said, “I can’t even believe it, how would we even deal with that in Ventura?” There are several countries such as Ireland, China, Norway, Canada and UK that are all sending aid. The relief effort for the United States is being headed by two former presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Thousands of citizens around the globe are also donating money and supplies to the Red Cross. They are working inside the country to help the people there. Donations can be sent through Itunes and other charities. ITunes specifically can take donations of five, ten, twenty five, fifty, one hundred or two hundred dollars. Junior Tyler Wagner said, It’s just crazy how all of this happened, I felt so inclined that I went to ITunes to donate.” These donations go directly to buying more supplies for the injured in Haiti. All the while these supplies are coming in, thousands of people are still trapped under rubble. An aftershock which hit January 20th was also a 6.1 shock that continued to harass the people and relief efforts. The lack of common things such as painkillers is a big problem and small hospitals are being overwhelmed. Over the next few weeks thing will hopefully be brought under control. At the moment the whole place is still in chaos. Mostly everything is destroyed even the capital buildings. The Haitian government will begin to rebuild its country once the dust settles.
